Do you know the story about the wise man showing his student how you can always fit more into a bucket?
First he added some big rocks and asked if it was full. His student agreed that it was but the master added some pebbles around the rocks and asked again. His student again said agreed it was full whereupon the master poured sand into the gaps and asked again. This time the student was sure that it was full but the master surprised him again by pouring in water.
Maximising our time is similar. We have to decide what needs to go into the limited amount of time that we have in the order of importance. The big things should go in first followed by the next biggest and so on.
Most of us know this as common sense advice but forget it in the hurly burly of daily life. Critically, we tend to forget what really matters (the important things) and focus only on the pressing things (the urgent things).
If we take just a short time to remind ourselves what really matters to
us and put it into the bucket first, we can make a big difference to our
focus and effectiveness.
Try taking 10 minutes to do this exercise (you can do it in the shower, whilst walking the dog or in a quiet moment at your desk):
If you take the time to do this regularly you’ll be amazed at the increase in your effectiveness which will lead to more progress and more happiness.
Surely you owe that 10 minutes to yourself!....
