We all get stuck sometimes. Perhaps we’re all stuck on something at any given point in time. There’s something we want but we lose the confidence, will, courage or clarity to move towards it and the more we think about it the harder it becomes because we know we’re stuck and that is both depressing and demotivating.
Here’s a simple 4 step process that
will get you out of the stuckness and get you moving forward. It’s based not
on focussing more on the ‘problem’ - which is what gets us depressed and
demotivated but on identifying what we want and looking for evidence of when
we have already succeeded to build upon. See also the article on resistance
and why problem solving doesn’t work.
Step 1.
Where are you now? Start by bringing to
mind the issue that you’re stuck with. Be as clear as you can what it is and
rank yourself from 1-10 on how you’re doing where 1 is ‘miles away’ and 10
is ‘already completely there’
Step 2.
Clarify what it is that you actually, deeply want.
Describe as fully as you can what would allow you to score it at 10. How
would you know if you were there? Try to describe it using all 5 senses. How
would it look? What would you hear and feel?
Step 3.
Identify what’s working. Whatever score
you gave yourself, what allowed you to score it as highly as you did? What
is your very best experience of this issue in the past? (however good that
was)? What skills, capabilities and resources did you bring to that
situation? This is the crucial bit. It won’t be easy but keep looking
for times when you’ve had successes, ignore the inner voice that says it
never has been, and ask yourself how you achieved them.
Step 4. Take a step forward. Whatever score you gave yourself at the beginning, what would you need to do to get it just one point higher? When you know this, what
about two points higher? This should give you enough to take some action.

If we take just a short time to remind ourselves what really matters to us
and put it into the bucket first, we can make a big difference to our focus
and effectiveness.

You are a part of more than one leadership team. They may not always be called teams or be explicitly involved with leadership. A leadership team is any group of people you are part of and who have a shared responsibility for something that no one can achieve alone. More...
The easiest way to understand how we can help, and whether you feel that you could work with us, is to begin with a conversation.
We don't believe in a "hard sell" and often find that people get value out of the exploratory discussion - whether or not we go on to work together.
