Coaching Guide - How to choose and use coaching

Introduction

Between 60% and 80% of UK organisations are now using coaching (CIPD). It is a phenomenon which shows few signs of abating – and the growth in demand is matched by the growth in those offering coaching services.

As practicing professional coaches, we are passionate about coaching and its power to transform the performance of individuals, teams and organisations.

From our experience as  HR Directors of blue chip organisations, and even with our experience and interest in coaching, we know how difficult it is to identify the best applications of coaching in an organisation, find the right suppliers, set up the engagement in the right way, manage and monitor the work and evaluate its impact.

These challenges are compounded by the fact that there is a wide range of understanding of coaching but, even in organisations who understand it well, very few are getting the full benefit of its potential.

There is very little literature aimed at helping clients choose and use coaching. Much of what exists is lengthy and most people don’t have the time to read a book before deciding what to do – let alone a whole range of books in order to reconcile the different opinions and approaches.

Our intention, therefore, in creating this booklet was to create a simple, concise and usable guide to the principal applications of coaching. We believe there are five of these and there is a short section on each:

Each section contains information about needs that it can address, how it works, how you should approach buying it (or sourcing it internally) and identifies the things you need to do to get the best from it.

Every coaching assignment is different and we can’t, and don’t try to, give you all of the answers. In the spirit of coaching we will, however, provide you with the most important questions so that you can work with your prospective coach/es to ensure that you get the best solution for you and your organisation.

It is our profound hope that this booklet can help people involved in using coaching to increase its impact on performance both by better setting up new interventions and also by reviewing existing their coaching practice.

Let's Talk

The easiest way to understand how we can help, and whether you feel that you could work with us, is to begin with a conversation.

We don't believe in a "hard sell" and often find that people get value out of the exploratory discussion - whether or not we go on to work together.
